Ellisport: The Hidden History
Name: Ellisport: The Hidden History
Date: April 7, 2017 - September 24, 2017
A new, special exhibit at the Vashon Heritage Museum highlights the hidden history of Ellisport, one of Vashon's oldest communities. Ellisport was once a bustling community with substantial commercial enterprises and docks. The neighborhood claims a number of firsts: first community platted in King County on Vashon Island when Washington was still a territory, first Chautauqua Assembly grounds in Washington, first Vashon community with electricity, first car ferry dock for the island, and the first regional radio broadcast tower reaching wider Puget Sound. Today, this history is mostly invisible and Ellisport is mainly known for its photogenic views, tranquil residential community, and extensive sandy beach. The exhibit is made possible by funding from King County 4Culture and the efforts of many Ellisport residents, present and past.
