Mukai Farmstead & Garden Open House
Friends of Mukai invite you to an Open House at the Mukai Farmstead & Garden, the landmarked historic property where the Mukai family lived and worked growing and shipping strawberries. Work on the restoration and preservation project will begin in earnest over the next several months. For now, walk through the Japanese stroll garden, designed by Kuni Mukai and imagine its beauty when restored; visit the American bungalow home, designed by B.D. Mukai; and experience this unique blending of the two cultures. Learn the history of this family and be inspired by their entrepreneurial spirit. Never to be forgotten are the dire consequences of Executive Order 9066 during World War II that exiled and imprisoned the Japanese American residents of Vashon and throughout the West Coast. This place is a reminder of the joys and sorrows of immigrants that were and are part of the fabric of our community.
