The Yama Project with Prof. Aranyosi
The Friends of Mukai are delighted to host Professor E. Floyd Aranyosi who will speak about the fascinating Yama village project of Bainbridge Island. Professor Aranyosi is currently the field director and principal investigator at the site of Yama. Yama village was a settlement of first (Issei) and second (Nisei) generation Japanese Americans. Young men immigrated to Bainbridge Island to work at the Port Blakely Sawmill, beginning in the early 1880s.
Join Friends of Mukai for an insightful look at what it takes to literally piece together the history of a group of 20th Century settlers who left a trove from their lives which would shed light on their history more than 80 years after they had moved on. (Please note, we’ll be at the Land Trust Bldg.)
