International Women's Day Women's Retreat
In celebration of International Women’s Day, Vashon Resettlement Committee invites women and girls aged 14 and older to share culture and empowerment with women from the Middle East and other countries in a day-long retreat on Saturday, March 9th at the Wesleyan Community Center. Guided by the poem “Thread by Thread: Weaving Hope in a Torn World”, workshops will feature a Syrian cooking class led by Syrian chef Jamila Aldahir, poetry without borders by Merna Ann Hecht, traditional Arabic dance by Safa Jneidi, art therapy with Nancy Slater and a culminating human weaving performance with Suzanne Hubbard and Erin Durrett. Other activities will include conversation circles on hijab (scarf wearing) practices and customs, basic Arabic words and greetings, and the healing power of art making. Together we will explore and enjoy the resilience found in community with women and our unique capacities as feminine activists in the world.
