Happy New Year! The Vashon-Maury Island Community Council is kicking it off with a discussion and Q & A session from our Special Guest Speaker, Peter Rubin. Peter is a member of the King County Metro Transit Advisory Commission. Peter will outline a few of the island-specific challenges around public transportation, such as coordination with ferry arrivals and departures; access to essential services such as schools, medical care, food bank, etc.; safety and shelter at primary pick-up locations; free or reduced fares for people who cannot afford a regular ticket. Peter is considering starting a local bus-riders forum. Do you have questions or topics you would like covered? Submit them to David Vogel, dsvogel.atty@gmail.com Your questions will be covered in the meeting and if time permits, answer questions from the meeting attendees too. Highlights from the December 2020 Meeting Major Jeffrey Flohr of the King County Sheriff’s office gave us an update and answered questions from the community. A Traffic Safety Committee is forming to address issues like flashing lights at major pedestrian crosswalks, and a traffic light at the 4 way stop in Vashon town. Other topics: a leash-free dog park, more affordable Internet access, and helping Puget Sound Energy remove all carbon sources from our electrical grid by 2035.
