Position Summary

Assist with preparation of enjoyable and nutritious meals for large group programs including Summer Camp participants, staff, and retreat groups. Assure smooth operation of a high volume, fast paced kitchen environment while accommodating special dietary needs and maintaining high standards of food quality, safety, and cleanliness. This position supports kitchen operation during meal times, including preparation, cooking, plating, and serving.

Organization Overview

Camp Fire Central Puget Sound offers a variety of co-ed enrichment opportunities that empower

youth, staff, and volunteers to discover their sparks, gain confidence, build essential life skills, value the natural word, and be active contributors in their communities. We strive to create an environment where each youth and staff member has a sense of belonging, opportunities to share passions, and a place to thrive.

Camp Sealth is a summer camp, outdoor education center, and retreat facility serving around 7,000 people year-round. Summer camp is comprised of eight weeks of overnight camp and six weeks of day camp, serving over 2,000 youth each summer. During the school year, Camp Sealth hosts outdoor education and retreats for school and non-profit groups between September and May; groups and schools may range in size from 10 to 300.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Prepare and cook a variety of meals, including breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks while following established recipes and portion sizes to meet the nutritional needs of campers and staff.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in the kitchen facility area, including proper storage of food items, equipment cleaning, and sanitation procedures.
  • Adhere to food safety guidelines and regulations, including proper handling, storage, and temperature monitoring of food products.
  • Support the overall operation of the kitchen during meal times, including food preparation, cooking, plating, and serving as needed.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues to coordinate tasks, prioritize responsibilities, and ensure efficient workflow.
  • Uphold Camp Sealth policies and procedures, including safety protocols and emergency procedures, to promote a safe and welcoming environment for campers and staff.
  • Demonstrate a positive and professional attitude while interacting with campers, staff, and visitors, fostering a friendly and inclusive atmosphere.

Secondary Job Responsibilities

  • Attend meetings as required by supervisor
  • Assist in weekly deep cleaning of specific kitchen areas.
  • Maintain accurate meal records and menus.
  • Assist with maintaining food inventory.
  • Sanitize kitchen surfaces regularly throughout the day.
  • Be prepared to assist campers or staff in the case of emergency.
  • Maintain awareness and mitigation of kitchen hazards and report any incidents or injuries promptly

Qualifications

  • Minimum two years of successful experience as a line cook or similar position.
  • Experience cooking and serving over 100 meals per day in buffet and/or family style.
  • Knowledge of basic cooking techniques, food safety guidelines, and kitchen equipment operation.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Current food handler and Serve Safe certification or willingness to obtain certification before the start of employment.
  • Flexibility to work variable hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, based on Camp schedule and operational needs.
  • Passion for working with children and creating memorable experiences in a Camp setting.
  • Previous experience working in a commercial kitchen, preferably in a Camp or similar setting.
  • Experience in a variety of food preparation, including family-style and buffet serving, managing special diets and allergen-free food, and high-volume preparation.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification

  • Efficient and safe use of knives and other kitchen tools.
  • Adaptable work style to adjust cooking method, times, and servings as needed while still maintaining quality.
  • Attention to detail to ensure safety, accuracy. and productivity.
  • Ability to remain calm in high pressure, fast paced environments.
  • Prioritizes punctuality and reliability to ensure successful meal service.
  • Passion for the culinary field and desire to learn.

Physical Requirements

  • Standing for long periods of time
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds.
  • Ability to sit, stoop, kneel, and crouch.
  • Repetitive motions of hands/wrists
  • Visual/auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards of the site and facilities
  • Ability to work and operate equipment in a large, busy institutional kitchen including commercial ovens, stove, flat-top, steamer, warming ovens, mixers, and dishwasher.
  • Ability to communicate in English, both orally and written
