Position Description: Executive Director
The Executive Director is responsible for the successful leadership and management of the Chamber of Commerce.

GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION:

  • Provide leadership that serves and informs the Chamber membership. Engage members and community to continually refine programming and strategic initiatives.
  • Lead public relations, communications, and marketing that engages stakeholders and positions the Chamber as a leader in the community and the region 
  • Plan / attend Chamber member meetings, relevant community meetings, and events
  • Support Chamber board committees and community working groups. Engage and empower them to advance Chamber priorities
  • Research, develop, and present strategic proposals and plans to the Chamber board, collaborate in advancing the financial health of the organization and implement Board decisions
  • Supervise the financial management of the Chamber and communicate financial information to the board;. manage risk, ensure appropriate coverages, and help ensure complete and transparent compliance with nonprofit governing laws and best practices
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Recruit, train, and manage office staff. Create a collaborative environment and delegate appropriately. 
  • Incorporate regular evaluation and adjust supervision accordingly to promote length of tenure and employee satisfaction.
  • Recruit, manage, and inspire volunteers to advance Chamber priorities
SPECIFIC JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Recruit new members, effectively steward existing members 
  • Support the goals adopted by the Board of Directors
  • Act as the primary ambassador for the Chamber to local businesses, community organizations, other Chambers, Washington State Ferries, County, State, and Federal government agencies
  • Identify and engage new opportunities to generate and expand non-dues revenue: continually improve current fundraising initiatives through existing Chamber special events.
  • Work closely with the organization’s accountant, tax preparer, and Board Treasurer to accurately report monthly financial statements, prepare and pay monthly payroll taxes and annual tax reports, and develop annual budget(s)
  • Assist the Board President in identifying and vetting potential new board members
  • Assist the President in board member development to ensure a robust and active board
  • Offer advice, information, and counsel to active Chamber committees
  • Prepare board meeting agendas and report to the board
  • Offer counsel and assistance to the Board President / Co-Presidents
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Business development experience
  • Strong public relations/marketing/outreach skills
  • Effective communication, both oral and written
  • Knowledge of the Vashon community
  • Ability to use QuickbooksOnline, Microsoft Office, Google Suite and various web apps
  • Ability to effectively delegate tasks
  • Ability to recruit, retain and evaluate quality staff and volunteers
  • Demonstrated marketing and communications expertise
  • Self-starter and highly motivated
  • Ability to motivate and inspire action in others
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrate a passion for the growth and sustainability of Vashon businesses
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • 30 hours per week
  • Executive Director is a salaried Chamber of Commerce position
  • Work is normally performed in a general office environment during Chamber business hours with required attendance at morning, evening or weekend meetings or sponsored events as deemed necessary by the President and Executive Director
  • A portion of the Executive Director’s time will be spent visiting Vashon businesses to recruit and maintain membership
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES:
  • The Vashon-Maury Island Chamber Executive Director will be distinguished by outstanding performance in an environment consisting largely of volunteer boards, committees, and office staff
CHAMBER WILL PROVIDE:
  • Office space complete with telephone and computer
  • Reimbursement for all off-island Chamber related mileage per IRS guidelines
  • Three weeks paid vacation
  • Paid holidays are Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day if they fall upon a regularly scheduled work day
  • Salary $45,000 per year part-time (30 hours per week)
  • Performance reviews on an annual basis
