Communications and Volunteer Program Manager

The Vashon Food Bank is hiring for the position of Communications and Volunteer Program Manager. The Vashon Food Bank relies on volunteers to deliver programs that help us achieve our mission to increase the island’s food security and connect people to supporting resources that help them thrive. We host 80+ volunteers per week and over 250 per year. This full-time staff position will lead recruitment, scheduling and management of the volunteer program and play a lead role in maintaining positive community relations by maintaining the organization’s social media and communications. The ideal candidate is organized, detail-oriented, a creative problem-solver, and a superior relationship manager who is comfortable working with diverse populations.

ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

The mission of the Vashon Maury Community Food Bank (VFB) is to work with the community to increase our island’s food security and connect people to other supporting resources that help them thrive. Our strategic goals are:

  • To provide free, nutritious food and essential household items to anyone in need,
  • To make the food bank a central point of access to other supporting resources that people need to  thrive,
  • To begin, and commit to continuing, the work of becoming an anti-racist organization,
  • To increase the organization’s long-term sustainability by investing in our human capital.
We achieve these goals by providing;
  • Free groceries every week through pick-up or home delivery,
  • Free summer meals for youth and adults,
  • Emergency food supplies at several satellite pantries across the island,
  • Connections to other empowering resources and services

STRUCTURE, COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
  • 40 hrs/wk
  • Mostly Mon-Fri, 9:00am-5:00pm, with occasional weekend or evening work as needed
  • Majority of work performed on-site in a casual office setting, occasional off-site work required
  • Reports to Operations Manager and Executive Director
  • $23-$26/hr DOE
  • Benefits: health insurance, optional retirement plan enrollment, cell-phone reimbursement, accrued paid vacation and sick leave
PRIMARY DUTIES
    Volunteer Program Management
  • Institute ongoing, creative recruitment of new volunteers including by means of print material and in-person events
  • Design engaging and educational orientations and ongoing learning opportunities
  • Update and maintain comprehensive and accessible Volunteer Handbook
  • Stay current on new and best practices in volunteer programs and recommend adoption as appropriate
  • Run background checks on all new volunteers
  • Maintain volunteer schedule, ensuring adequate coverage for all positions and a robust on-call system for essential roles
        Work with leadership team to:
  • Develop and modify volunteer positions to respond to emerging programmatic needs
  • Match volunteers with opportunities that fit their time, talents and interests
  • Develop volunteer leadership roles
  • Develop and update volunteer-related policies and guidelines, including accurate job descriptions
  • Maintain database of volunteer information including contact information,
  • Hours tracking, and history of relationship with the organization
  • Coordinate volunteer appreciation gestures and events throughout the year
  • Schedule formal and informal volunteer performance reviews
    Community Outreach and Engagement
    Work as part of a team to promote the Food Bank and maintain community support.
  • Develop and implement annual social media plan
  • Compose and design monthly email newsletter
  • Provide event support for third party fundraisers, food drives, and other events
  • Coordinate logistics of food drives
  • Coordinate tours and educational opportunities regarding food security and the vital work of the Food Bank
  • Serve as a knowledgeable and effective advocate in the community
    Program and Operations Support
  • Support programs and operations by filling in, as needed, in the absence of key staff or volunteers
  • Assist with other tasks as requested
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, particularly around hunger and food security
  • Experience working with and within diverse populations
  • Highly organized with excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • 1+ years volunteer supervision; volunteer program management desirable
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) required; familiarity with Google Apps preferred
  • Flexibility and comfort with working in a dynamic environment
DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
  • Basic graphic design and visual composition for community engagement materials
  • Experience with social media and marketing
  • College degree (BA/BS/AA) degree and/or equivalent work experience
  • Problem solving and conflict resolution
  • Ability to lift 25-40 lbs
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Spanish language skills desirable
