How to Safely Reopen Vashon Island Businesses

It’s no secret that the past two months have been a trying time for our community’s small businesses. Fewer customers, mandatory closures, and state-ordered social distancing guidelines have forced many of us to temporarily shutter our businesses or scramble to reorganize them.

The good news: Our efforts seem to be paying off. We’re flattening the curve, and the governor is now beginning a phased reopening of the state’s economy!

Trying to reopen a business in these unusual circumstances can be a daunting task, especially if you’re doing it alone. How do you reassure customers your business is safe? How do you protect your employees? What changes might need to be made as we work to return to normal?

To help our community’s businesses reopen safely and efficiently, the Vashon-Maury Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Vashon BePrepared is convening a series of industry-specific re-opening round tables aimed at identifying best practices. We’ll share our concerns, come up with actionable strategies, and ultimately craft a toolkit to help the island’s economy reopen at scale. The goal is to support our businesses and our neighbors by taking the guesswork out of how to reopen.

This project is open to all Vashon Island businesses, regardless of whether or not the business is a member of the Chamber of Commerce.

How to Get Involved
We can’t do this without you. We are putting together industry-specific working groups, and we’re asking you to join. To let us know you’re interested, click this link XXXXX and sign up on VashonChamber.com. Please indicate which of the following industry working groups you’d like to join:

  • Merchants and retail stores
  • Restaurants and food service
  • Lodging
  • Recreation
  • Hair stylists, nail salons and other in-person services
  • Beverage makers
  • Body workers, including massage therapists, acupuncturists, and others
  • Nonprofits and community services

Don’t see your industry listed? Let us know! These categories are meant to include most of our on-island businesses, but we want to be responsive to the community's needs and are happy to adjust them if necessary.

We are also looking for facilitators for each industry group, so let us know at executivedirector@vashonchamber.com if you are interested in leading a session. We will handle all the set-up.

The Chamber of Commerce and Vashon BePrepared believes that the best way to get through these difficult times is together. Please join us, share your insight, and help us emerge from this challenge stronger than ever.

Stay healthy!
