R2-D2 and BB-8 Announce Campaign for Unofficial Mayors of Vashon
Droids to raise funds for Vashon Schools Foundation
Vashon – Pledging to make Vashon public schools among the best in the galaxy, R2-D2 and BB-8, astromec droids popularized by the Star Wars movies, have announced their candidacy for Unofficial Mayors of Vashon.
“These are the droids Vashon is looking for. They will use the force for good to make Vashon schools out of this world,” said Beth Lindsay, president of the Vashon Schools Foundation.

The characters R2-D2 and BB-8 have fans of all ages from their roles in the movies. These particular robots were built on island using 3D printers, and the Foundation hopes they will appeal to kids in particular because they were built using the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) technology that is emphasized in Vashon schools.

“This is a great example of the technology that Vashon students are learning in class. The Foundation has funded STEAM programs, including faculty, equipment, calculators and other classroom supplies,” said Amy Broomhall, vice president of Vashon Schools Foundation.

Though fluent in 6 million forms of communication, R2-D2 and BB-8 do not plan to make many campaign stump speeches. They will appear at Strawberry Festival and other public events throughout the summer. Like all good politicians, they will host fundraising events with a goal of raising $10,000 for Vashon Schools Foundation.
R2-D2 will kick off their campaign at the Vashon Schools Foundation-sponsored Family Feast in the Vashon High School from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 4th, where R2-D2 will wish students and families “May the 4th be with you.” The dinner is open to the community. VSF suggests a contribution of $5 per child and $10 per adult for the meal. They will accept other donations in support of school programs.

Founded in 2010, Vashon Schools Foundation has raised more than $2 million to provide for the students and educators of Vashon Island School District. From cutting-edge curriculum to textbooks, calculators, library acquisitions, staff positions, and more, Vashon Schools Foundation has made valuable investments and a lasting impact on island schools.
